Lymph, Gua Sha & Skin Health

Many of us were taught to categorize and treat our skin according to four basic types: oily, dry, combination and the coveted “normal.” Although we do have recurring patterns and issues, our skin, like the rest of our body, also goes through phases, stages and occasional outbursts. So instead of relying on just the traditional labels, I think it makes sense to view our skin as a complex ecosystem, capable of reaching a balanced state with the right type of support, inside and out.

Dysfunction on the surface of the skin can often be related to lymph stagnation. The lymphatic system plays a key role in the health of our skin. It is a detoxification system right underneath the surface. Lymph is the fluid of the lymphatic system that assists us in detoxification by working with the organs of the body. These organs, which include the spleen and thymus, help remove bacteria, viral waste and impurities. Lymph fluid, which consists mainly of white blood cells, moves underneath the surface of our skin, via lymph nodes, with the assistance of exercise and manual manipulation.

When the lymph becomes stagnant or stuck due to scar tissue, inactivity or an overabundance of impurities, fluid retention can occur. This can create breakouts, inflammation, flakiness and at times more serious conditions. Stagnant lymph also decreases nutrient absorption, leading to the deterioration of our cells. Lymphatic health can be improved by noticing symptoms and encouraging lymph flow. Regular Gua Sha massage and exercise can greatly improve lymph flow and reduce cortisol, which helps the entire body in coming into balance. Facials that include Gua Sha and cupping can significantly improve skin health and appearance.

In my skincare and massage practice at Radiate, I use Gua Sha as a tool to move stagnant lymph and remove any underlying obstructions to the healthy flow of lymph. This promotes healthy nutrient absorption, detoxification, reduces puffiness and softens lines and deeper wrinkles. I use Botnia skin care products with Gua Sha to deeply nourish the skin and improve functionality and health.

I am so excited to share with you the benefits of receiving Gua Sha. I love answering questions and nerding out, so feel free to email me at melody@radiate.studio or pull me aside after yoga class for a chat!

Looking forward to connecting,

Melody
